OPEN CALL - CREATIVE BRIEF FOR ARTISTS

ARTWORK PROMPT

 

We are seeking original work from artists addressing community themes within their art. This is an opportunity for people to represent themselves and their communities. $1000 each will be awarded to our People’s Choice Award, Youth Award, and Adult Award winners. Any person of any age residing in Aroostook County, Maine may apply.

 

We’re looking for artwork that deals with these questions and phrases surrounding our collective experience of a global pandemic: 

 

How does a common experience like a pandemic unite us?

 

What does reunion look like to you? 

 

How do communities face challenges together? 

 

Who is in your community and how do you care for them? 

 

Key words/phrases to consider: community, tradition, meal sharing, reunion, coming together, caring, healing, sharing, our journey, uniting, strength, neighbor, family. 

 

 

SUBMISSION DETAILS

 

Each artist may submit one work for consideration. The contest will be judged by a jury of local artists and community leaders. There will be three awards given at the completion of the contest: an Adult Award, a Youth Award, and a People’s Choice Award. Every appropriate submission will be posted to our social media and exhibited on our website. Each winning artist will be interviewed to create short videos that will be shared alongside the winning artworks. Winning submissions will be made into prints and sent out to over 34,000 households in Aroostook County.

 

 

Please read more details below: 

 

  • You must be a resident of Aroostook County to be eligible.

 

  • Contest winners must allow Lights Out Art Consulting or affiliates to record an interview of them talking about their artwork. Clips from this interview will be shared on social media alongside the winning submissions. 

 

  • $1000 will be awarded to each winner. Your artwork will be printed on a 6.5”x9” mailer and mailed to over 34,000 homes in Aroostook County as well as shared widely via social media. 

 

  • Please include a statement about the artwork that is 100 words or less (this statement will not be used as criteria to judge the work) or a recorded statement of the same length. We would also love process photos or videos of the creation of your artwork.

 

  • If you are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must sign off on your submission. 

 

  • Once you have submitted, People’s Choice voting begins once we process your submission and upload it to our website. Visitors will be able to like your submission on our page. Only these likes will count towards the People’s Choice Award winner.

 

The deadline for submissions is February 18, 2022, 11:59 PM

 

 

REQUIRED ARTWORK SPECIFICATIONS

 

  • The artwork can be any medium (such as drawings, paintings, fiber arts, sculpture, installation, photography, etc.) and MUST be photographed and submitted in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format.

 

  • Please submit one photo between one (1) and ten (10) megabytes in size.

 

  • Please submit your photo in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format.

 

  • Please submit a written description not exceeding 100 words (this statement will not be used as criteria to judge the work) OR a recorded statement of the same length. 

 

  • Keep in mind that the winning work will be printed on a 6.5” x 9” mailer (can be either portrait or landscape). 

 

  • Winning artwork may be re-photographed by the Lights Out Art Consulting Team or affiliates and the final printed material may crop your work.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED BY MARCH 28, 2022

 

We will announce winners on our website and on our social media. We plan to hold an awards event in early April, details to be determined.
