Aretha Aoki

I am a dancer and choreographer whose research of Japanese (her)stories is expressed within a formal container of traditional Japanese practices that I approach through a contemporary and hybrid sensibility.

I am a choreographer, performer, and educator originally from unceded Coast Salish territory (Vancouver, B.C.) and currently residing in Wabanahkik (Maine). My work has been performed regionally, nationally and internationally. I was recently selected to be a part of the New England Foundation for the Arts, Regional Dance Development Initiative cohort and as part of this, my work will be featured at the ICA in Boston in March, 2022. I was recently awarded a Maine Arts Commission project grant in support of my current work, IzumonookunI.
