Gabriel Frey

I am a Passamaquoddy basket maker; my family has been making traditional black ash baskets for over 13 generations. I specialize in utility baskets such as pack baskets, market baskets, and purses. I weave each solely with black ash and handcraft leather features such as straps, lids, and liners for each basket.

I am a 2019 US Artist Fellow in traditional arts, and a 2020 Maine Artist Fellow in traditional craft. I sell my work at Native American art shows in Maine and in Santa Fe Indian Market, where I have won various competition ribbons in 2017 and 2019. I also teach basket making to Wabanaki youth at the Abbe Museum and guest lecture at the University of Maine School of Forest Resources.
