Atlantic Morning
Woodhull’s Safford House opened its doors for 6 months in 2025 to present Atlantic Morning, curated by Lights Out. Lovingly restored to its historic splendor, the house was home to the works of 17 artists celebrating painting, tapestry, and sculpture as unified under the theme of architecture. Channeling the clarity of early light, Atlantic Morning is a testament to the timeless qualities of thoughtful design.

Woodhull’s Safford House opens its doors to present Atlantic Morning, curated by Lights Out. Lovingly restored to its historic splendor, the house is home to the works of 17 artists celebrating painting, tapestry, and sculpture as unified under the theme of architecture. Channeling the clarity of early light, Atlantic Morning is a testament to the timeless qualities of thoughtful design. Partner and Director of Millwork at Woodhull, Scott Stuart, chats with us about a life of woodworking, the importance of being thoughtful about your work, and the process of creating a show together.

Throughout this historic high-style Italianate mansion, originally built in 1858, Lights Out produced an exhibition that spanned all four floors, including gallery rooms, ballroom studios, and a cupola—each offering a unique encounter with art and architecture. The show featured artists with deep ties to the Maine arts community, working across media including installation, painting, tapestry, and ceramics.

The artists in Atlantic Morning were unified by their fastidious natures and respect for materials—qualities that resonate with the Safford House’s own careful restoration. The attention and respect given to this house were mirrored in the artwork within, unifying the old and the new. Whether abstract or figurative, material or illusory, against the careful proportions of the house, all forms are dedicated to thoughtful style and attention to detail.
