Dark the Night and Bright the Stars

Dark the Night and Bright the Stars showcases visual art, textiles, sculpture, and traditional crafts to focus on themes of ancestry. Each of the seven Maine artists brings unique perspectives influenced by Passamaquoddy, Mi’kmaq, Jewish, Afro-Atlantic, Scandinavian, and Celtic ancestral roots. Special events, including storytelling, a community art project, and artist talks that have been paired with the exhibition to deepen audience engagement with the artists’ stories and heritage.

Dark the Night & Bright the Stars

A Lights Out Film

Originally filmed as a separate series from January 2021 to February 2023, we discovered a powerful thread connecting these seven artists who each engage with their ancestry in deeply intentional ways. Intentionally stitched together, the film brings together these artists and showcases the differences and commonalities in their understanding, practice, and relationship with ancestry.
