Horizons

Lights Out presents 'Horizons,' a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by Karen Jelenfy at The Commons in Belfast, Maine.

"I‘ve been working on the idea of Horizons since June 2025. It came to me while looking at some John Walker paintings that I particularly admire – a kind of almost infinite land/sea and darkened horizon. I feel this preoccupation of mine reflects our current situation better than the more typical arrangement of landscape formats. The landscape is not a landscape. The horizon is not a horizon – it’s a dark cap pressing down – scarcely attainable and barely desirable. The works are all inspired by Maine as it comes under siege from many forces, natural and unnatural."

Works will be available online, in person Tuesday - Friday, 11am - 4pm, and weekends by appointment at The Commons in Belfast, Maine.

Artist Interview

Karen Jelenfy

I come from an Abstract Expressionist background - those are my people. At the moment I am consumed by combining the delicate sensibilities of my pencil drawings with the energy and color of my paintings to create sculpture. I am doing a lot of experimenting.
