Artist Interview

Lauren Fensterstock

Lauren Fensterstock creates elaborate sculptures and installations that bind our physical and metaphysical landscapes. Extravagant in their material presence and devotional labor, her work commands the eye to the present moment to bring attention to embodied experience. Her recent exhibitions include The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Reykjavik Art Museum, Chrysler Museum, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Rijswijk Museum, and Des Moines Art Center. She has received grants from United States Artists, Groot Foundation, and Artist's Resource Trust, and is a Critic at the Rhode Island School of Design.

"My recent sculptures draw from Buddhist practice to bring attention to embodied experience. Extravagant in their material presence and devotional labor, my work commands the eye to the present space and moment. When we are present, we reside in the materiality of the body and understand that our perception of self is not a fixed idea, but an evolving collaboration with the physical world around us.
